If you've tried to buy a hot new Pokémon set in Canada, you know the drill. It sells out in minutes, then it shows up on marketplaces for double the price. Crazy business. It's frustrating, and honestly it's a big part of why we started The Poke Office. So here's how to shop smart, and how pre-orders work on our site.
1. Know the real price before you buy
Before you pay a premium, check what the product actually sells for. Look at sold listings, not asking prices, and compare a few Canadian shops. And remember, US prices don't include the exchange rate, cross-border shipping or duties. A "cheap" US listing can end up costing you more than just buying in Canada.
2. Watch out for resealed and tampered product
- Buy sealed product from shops and sellers with a real reputation and clear contact info.
- Check the shrink-wrap. Factory wrap is usually tight and clean, with consistent seams. Loose, bubbly or overly shiny wrap is a red flag.
- Be careful with loose "sealed" packs at prices that seem too good to be true.
- If you're meeting someone local, meet in a public place and look the product over before you pay.
3. Pre-order from a shop you trust
Pre-ordering is the easiest way to skip the launch-day chaos. You lock in your product at a set price, and the shop ships it when it arrives. The catch is that shops get allocations from distributors, and those allocations aren't always what the shop ordered. That's just how it works across the whole industry right now, and a good shop is upfront with you about it.
How pre-orders work at The Poke Office
- Your price is locked in. The price you pay is the price you pay. We never raise it after you order, and if we lower the price before your pre-order ships, we'll refund you the difference.
- Shipping: We aim to ship pre-orders from Kamloops on release day. Every so often a distributor delivers late, and when that happens your order ships as soon as our stock arrives.
- Mixed carts: If your order has a pre-order plus in-stock items, everything ships together once the pre-order arrives. Want your in-stock stuff sooner? Just place it as a separate order.
- If we can't fill your pre-order: It doesn't happen often, but if it does, you choose a full refund or store credit.
- Limits on hot products: Some products have a per-customer limit to keep things fair for everyone. Any limit is listed in the product description, and orders that go over it will be cancelled.
- Changing your mind: Under our current refund policy, you can cancel a pre-order in full to store credit, or get a refund to your original payment method minus a 10% restocking fee. Full details are in our refund policy.
4. Shop local when you can
We're based in Kamloops, BC, and the goal is to be the go-to Pokémon shop for Western Canada. When you buy from us, you're dealing with real people. It's me and Kevin, building this alongside our day jobs. We ship across Canada (free over $350), and we're happy to do local meetups in public places around Kamloops.
5. Got cards to sell or trade?
We buy and trade too. Our starting rates are 70% cash or 80% in trade credit. Check out What We Buy & Our Rates for the details.
